TOWAMENCIN- While the end of the game may not have been ideal, the North Penn lacrosse team seniors had a lot to be grateful for during senior night on Saturday evening.
Seniors Mike Tappen, Chris Young, Kenny Miller, Dan Gross, Ryan Dwyer and Vincent Ruggeri were all honored in front of a large crowd on the turf field. Each senior was escorted individually by their parents through an isle made by the rest of the team. Following the introductions, the seniors and their parents gathered around for a group photo.
Then it was game-time.
After a sluggish first half in which North Penn was trailing Wissahickon 6-2, the Knights came back firing. North Penn scored five unanswered goals, with the tying and go ahead goals coming from Kyle Heinig and Gross respectively.
However, with less than two minutes remaining in regulation, the Trojans scored a tying goal which forced overtime. Overtime was less than a minute as Wissahickon got off to a breakaway almost immediately after the opening faceoff to score and win the game.
But despite the loss, the Knights know there is still a lot to be happy about. Playing their last few games together, the seniors have been reflecting back on their careers and how many memories they have created over the years.
“It’s kind of bittersweet [to be playing my last games at North Penn],” said Tappen. “I love playing for North Penn but at the same time I’m ready to move on and let other kids get the chance to fill in my shoes. It’s always a good time when I’m hanging out with the guys. They are a great group of friends”
“I had fun this year especially since it was my first year playing varsity,” added Miller.
In their last few games, the Knights will host one final home game against Hatboro Horsham on Tuesday and will wrap up the season at Lansdale Catholic Thursday.
