TOWAMENCIN-A coaching change can be a daunting task for some, but for the North Penn boys’ volleyball team, it is an opportunity for yet another successful season.
Under new head coach Tim Moyer, the team has gotten off to a hot start going 7-2 to start the season, including a win over Upper Dublin Thursday afternoon by a score 3-0.
“We started off slow and the defense was lacking,” said senior Matt Elias. “But as the game went on we started focusing more on defense and we came together as a team.”
North Penn struggled in the first set, only winning by a margin of five in a 25-20 win. But the Knights dominated the next two sets winning 25-15 and 25-14.
With such a good start players on the team are very impressed with how Moyer is coaching the team.
“It was a little different at first,” said Elias. “But I was somewhat familiar with him and I like what he’s doing with the team.”
Moyer knew coming into the season that these group of boys had a lot of potential, but he was not sure how they would handle the change.
“I knew some of the coaching staff, so I felt confident coming in,” said Moyer. “It was more or less trying to get them to buy into my philosophy.”
And at this point of the season, it is clear that the boys have adapted Moyer’s philosophy and are proving just how dominant they are.
“The players have been great. They looked forward to a new change. I’m still a player at heart and they are buying into my philosophy. They are a great, talented group of kids.”
Although the team has looked good up until now, Moyer knows there are still some things the team needs to work on if they want to make a deep postseason run.
“We need to work on some team things. Some errors are made when their head is not quite in the game. We need to make teams earn points instead of giving them points.”
The Knights travel down the road to Christopher Dock for their first invitational of the year. After that the Knights will be back in league action next week when the play CB East and West. The team knows this is a very crucial part of their schedule and they need a strong showing if they want to contend in the playoffs.
“We definitely want a good showing,” said Elias. “If we keep improving like we are, states is definitely a possibility for us.”
“We are looking forward to East and West next week,” said Moyer. If we come together as a team, we are looking to be one of those teams playing in a long postseason run.”
