TOWAMENCIN- It may not have been the prettiest of wins for the North Penn Lady Knights basketball team, but it was a win nonetheless as they took down the Central Bucks South Titans in a defensive battle, winning 32-23.
Tuesday night’s Continental Conference matchup continued a string of pivotal matchups as the Lady Knights (8-3) were coming off a big upset win of previously undefeated Cheltenham on Saturday. Prior to that, the Lady Knights dropped a heartbreaking double overtime loss to CB West on Friday night.
After the West lost, coach Maggie Demarteleire said, “They need to follow instruction, and show more composure and do a better job communicating on the court.”
It seemed on Tuesday that the Lady Knights followed their coach’s advice and showed more composure and communicated more which were two big factors that went into this win.
While they played better than they did on Friday, it was not a perfect game either. The girls turned the ball over many times, especially early on in the game, which gave South more than enough opportunities to win , but for the Lady Knights, their defense stole the show and held the Titans to only 23 points.
“In the first quarter we had seven turnovers,” noted sophomore 3-point specialist Vicky Tumasz. “After that we came off together as a team and knew we had to step it up to win the game.”
Tumasz also attributed the help of junior Lauren Crisler and senior Steph Knauer to not just this win, but many of North Penn’s wins this season.
“It’s a lot of help [to have Crisler and Knauer down low] because once you get it in they do what they do and they score or get fouled.”
With the win the Lady Knights are in 2nd place by half a game over West in the standings. Senior Brenda McDermott believes it was a big win for North Penn going forward.
“It’s a big win, especially since we lost to West on Friday night. We knew we had to come out strong. It was not pretty but we won so I’m glad,” McDermott said. “We are just trying to keep the ball rolling and hopefully get the rest of the season underway and into the playoffs”
The Lady Knights, coming into the home stretch of the regular season, will next travel to Quakertown high school to take on the Panthers on Friday.

First off i love the “sophomore 3-point specialist” tag for Vicky, it fits so well, as well as for another sophomore Erin Mayer who has also draining 3’s Friday night if i’m correct 12 of of her 14 points where 3’s. Moreover, i can say after have been to 5 straight of the girls games i can see lots of improvements. After the tough loss Friday night where the reff called a foul with .02 of a second left then decided to disregard it and let the game end. It was tough, then to see the girls come on out Sat and fight hard after another slow start. They got their rhythm down and you couldn’t stop them. Can’t wait to see what happens Tuesday night when they have another home game.
