Braving the bustling streets of Manhattan with an impending hurricane threatening the nation’s largest city was no cakewalk. But it was well worth it when I arrived at my destination: Hofstra University.
When I received a free application for Hofstra in the mail along with a brochure, I was expecting a small college that no one has heard of. After my tour, I realized that Hofstra was a hidden treasure that provides endless opportunities for every one of its 11,000 students.
Even though I never heard of Hofstra previously, I was amazed to find out that the University hosted the second Presidential Debate this past October. The honor of hosting a debate is enormous, and Hofstra was granted that honor twice, displaying the commendable hospitality and professionalism of this institution.
I was taken aback by the enormity of the 240 acre campus. Not only was the campus massive, it was breath taking; it felt as if I was walking through a quaint village instead of a college campus.
While entranced by the beautiful surroundings, it’s hard to imagine the one and only New York City is only a short 25 miles away. Hofstra offers all the benefits of living in the city, such as internships and work opportunities, without the incessant noise and millions of people.
Another perk of Hofstra’s campus life is the way it feels like a home away from home. With over 35 residence halls, 20 different places to eat, 200 student clubs and activities and 17 varsity sports, you can choose how to live your college career and have a great time doing it.
Along with the diversity of Hofstra’s campus life, the university offers 140 academic programs and consists of over 10 different schools, including a communications, business, medicine and law school. Hofstra is a well-rounded university with opportunities for everyone.
Never judge a college by its brochure; it may be the place you call home for the next four years.
