As summer quickly approaches and the number of days left in school declines rapidly, many seniors prepare to take the next huge step in adulthood: college. Many students will be on their own for the first time come fall and so now is the time to start preparing for life in a dorm and the items you will need. It’s important to have a living space that is unique to you, while also being comfortable and functional. So before you head off, here are a few ways to enhance your living space.

Bedding- No matter what school you are going to, most dorms are notorious for giving students stiff, sorry excuses for mattresses that are likely incomparable to your soft, comfy bed at home. They’re also bare boned and it’s your responsibility to bring sheets, pillowcases, and everything else you need to get a good night’s sleep. Quality mattress pads, sheets, and blankets are crucial to your success and alleviation, so make sure you are buying ones that are durable and easy maintenance.

Cleaning Supplies- A tidy room makes students’ productivity and focus better so to keep up with daily chores, you’re going to need supplies. There are basic items like disinfectant wipes, brooms, and a dustpan to keep the room generally clean, but if you want your dorm to be spotless I would recommend looking for helpful tools like wood cleaner (helps with wooden furniture a lot) or a microfiber sweeper. And above all, trash bags are a must to declutter your space, so be sure to get plenty.

Snacks- A good way to save money and time is to think ahead and pack plenty of your favorite snacks! Some good must-have treats include granola bars, popcorn, trail mix, and of course chips. Buying in bulk is definitely the safer option over wasting extra money on vending machine food on campus. Whether you’re going to cram for a test or have some downtime, rewarding yourself with a quick bite can boost your energy and be a stress reliever.

Hygiene/Shower Items- A lot of times college students are using communal bathrooms which means it’s even more necessary to pack all the essential toiletries to maintain your well-being. Items like skincare products, razors and hand sanitizer should be included based on your own personal hygiene and how often you will use such products. Travel size toothbrushes and small toiletry bags are easy to carry back and forth from your dorm room, as well as using a shower caddy (try not to buy mesh caddies, they can easily grow mold) to transport your soap, conditioner and shampoo.

Desk supplies- In typical back to school fashion, you should be equipped with notebooks, pens, and binders to organize your notes for each of your classes. Additionally, day planners can help with scheduling important dates and everyday tasks. As for your computer, it can also be helpful to pick out extra chargers (in case you lose one) and a case to protect it from being damaged.

Decor- The most fun part of planning out your dorm room is getting to accessorize it and make it your own. Making your dorm feel like home is the perfect way to ease into college life. Posters, photos, and cute lights can really brighten the place up and show off your personality. To find inspiration, look to apps like TikTok and Pinterest that will help you enhance your environment.
