The Presidential debate set for Wednesday, October 23, has been canceled. Former President Donald Trump has declined to attend the CNN debate next week stating “it’s too late”. But it is not “too late” for the millions of undecided voters who deserve another debate.
Throughout history, American politics has evolved to fit into the everchanging mold that its people have set forth. What the people wanted to change about the past, start in the present, and pave for the future has bled into the political campaigns of that time.
However, recently, that has not been the case. Childish insults, extreme propaganda, and expanding radical views has become America’s political world today.
Political parties have started to feel more like a ruthless sports game; two teams and no middle ground, both believing that they are the winning side. But politics should not be like routing for a sports team. Politics should and always be about the people.
So why do the people need another debate? Well, the states of Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, North Carolina, Georgia, Michigian, Arizona, and Nevada are currently swing states in the 2024 election. They could be decided by whoever shows up to the polls on November fifth. In fact, it could even be so close as to come down to only two electoral college votes per state.
If the American people were given another debate, they would also be able to hear more about the pressing issues that this country cares about; making more of an educated decision in the booth.
According to a study done by Newsweek, 57% of about 3,000 randomly selected adults agreed that another debate would be wise. If politics should be about the people, and the majority want another debate, shouldn’t there be one? The United States is a democracy, not a dictatorship. The wishes of the American citizens matter and should be heard.
Last debate, Donald Trump and Kamala Harris touched on an array of topics from immigration laws and foreign policy to abortion rights and federal taxes. America deserves to hear more about these matters that directly affect them.
There has only been one debate between Trump and Harris so far; the first being with President Joe Biden before he dropped out from the race. This is why it is even more important to have another debate. It would be able to give viewers a chance to see how Kamala Harris fairs under discussion with her republican opponent.
There are usually three debates during election years, and the people of this country deserve that right. No candidate should be allowed to push it off because they simply don’t want to do it.
Even though both Trump and Harris have had their own rallies, having a debate is much more effective. Candidates are speaking not only of their own plans, but also, they are speaking to each other and this country. Additionally, debates fact-check. At rallies, candidates can spin the narrative in any way that they want since there is no interviewers actively correcting them.
This presidential election decides the next four years of our country. The United States has never settled for less, and we, the people, should not start now.
If Donald Trump truly wants to “Make America Great Again”, there has to be an overwhelming initiative to deliver another presidential debate for the millions that want it.
