Editorial: Donald Trump’s actions inexcusable
There was nothing Melania Trump could have said that would undo the damage that her husband Donald Trump brought to his campaign. The inappropriate comments that Trump made in his “private conversation” with Billy Bush over a decade ago that have recently surfaced were not surprising as he has talked of women in a demeaning way multiple times.
Trump has used many derogatory words to offend a woman including: disgusting, slob, fat, ugly, and unattractive. This from a candidate who professes to love women and who desperately needs their votes if he is to become president.
Women have been victims of body shaming for years. Women are taught from a very young age to find every flaw on their body. Many young girls are made to feel less than pretty and develop lifelong struggles attempt to attain perfection. Any person who reinforces such sexist and demeaning ideas about women with inflammatory words or actions should not be president.
Recently, a political commercial by the Hillary Clinton campaign has touched many women across the nation. The commercial depicts female millennials watching as Trump trashes women on their appearances. This commercial reflects the negative influence that people, much like Donald Trump, can have on the next generation.
For the first time over the course of the presidential election, Trump has apologized for his actions, claiming that “these words don’t reflect who [he is].” However, his words do reflect who he is. One does not say what they do not think.
Furthermore, the sincerity of the apology is questionable as Trump has been a repeat verbal offender. Maybe voters should take the advice of poet Maya Angelou who once said, “When a person shows you who they are, believe them the first time.”
Trump has made too many mistakes, and he has escaped from them too many times. This occurrence is different; not even Donald Trump’s flawless wife can condone his offensive words.
