Knight Like: Boy with Leukemia given a Disney room makeover – Molly Dooling
Eight year old Austin Bolender was given the best surprise a kid could wish for; a room fit for a king, a Lion King that is. This classic Disney film is Bolender’s favorite movie, and the Special Spaces of San Francisco organization helped to make it all possible for the little boy live in his perfect space. But why was he given this special bedroom? The third grader was diagnosed with Leukemia back in May of 2014. After being in the hospital for six weeks, it was time for him to return home. But there was one condition, Bolender’s bedroom had to be perfectly clean and neat so that no germs would enter his body, or else he would be right back in the hospital. This is where Special Spaces teamed up with Disney on Ice performers to make Bolender’s favorite movie come to life. The room came complete with a huge painting of the man characters of the movie, stuffed animals, and even a brand new bed. But the hardest part of the project was making it a place that two people could live in. Bolender shares a room with his six year old brother, Dominic. When the room was revealed to the boys, their reactions were priceless. Bolender’s parents are so thankful that this could have been done, and appreciate everything that went into making their son’s dream room a reality.
