Two parties, two candidates, one election – The fall of an election year throws America back into the heat of campaigns and conventions. This year the sporadic polls are indicating that Governor Mitt Romney could be our 45th President. But what do we know about Mitt Romney?
Not always a politician, Mitt Romney’s choices led him from his birth place in Detroit to living and working in the private sector, attaining dual degrees from Harvard law and Harvard Business School, supporting his large family consisting of his wife, five sons, and eighteen grandchildren, becoming governor of Massachusetts and now the Republican nomination for President of the United States.
With experiences touching in small businesses and budget management, the Republican candidate has an idea on what America needs: “I spent my whole life in the private sector, 25 years in the private sector. I understand that when government takes more money out of the hands of people, it makes it more difficult for them to buy things. If they can’t buy things, the economy doesn’t grow. If the economy doesn’t grow, we don’t put Americans to work.”
His presence and activity in the functions like the turn-around of Massachusetts’ debt or even the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympics’ money crisis, Romney witnessed and recognized the flaws in government spending – He blatantly points out: “Government is taking 40 percent of the GDP. And that’s at the state, local and federal level. President Obama has taken government spending at the federal level from 20 percent to 25 percent. Look, at some point, you cease being a free economy, and you become a government economy. And we’ve got to stop that.” He continues: “In the richest country in the history of the world, this Obama economy has crushed the middle class. Family income has fallen by $4,000, but health insurance premiums are higher, food prices are higher, utility bills are higher, and gasoline prices have doubled. Today more Americans wake up in poverty than ever before.”
The current corruption, out-of-control spending, and debt America is currently struggling with needs to be corrected. Taking this opportunity, with his successes and experiences in his back pocket, Mitt Romney confidently takes the leadership.
“I am running for president to help create a better future. A future where everyone who wants a job can find one. Where no senior fears for the security of their retirement. An America where every parent knows that their child will get an education that leads them to a good job and a bright horizon. And unlike the president, I have a plan to create 12 million new jobs, ” stated Romney during the Republican Convention.
Jobs. America needs jobs. Good jobs. The Republican campaign is held by the plan proposed and supported by Romney: Mitt’s Five Point Plan.
A plan for a stronger middle class starts out with tackling the deficit. Romney stresses the need to reduce unnecessary spending, and intends to reduce non-security discretionary spending all the while capping federal spending. He wants less federal government control on the economy by allowing the states more freedom to implement their own government programs. Additionally, he will consolidate organizations and align the compensation of federal employees with their private-sector counterparts.
“Let me make this very clear – unlike President Obama, I will not raise taxes on the middle class. As president, I will protect the sanctity of life. I will honor the institution of marriage. And I will guarantee America’s first liberty: the freedom of religion. President Obama promised to begin to slow the rise of the oceans and heal the planet. My promise is to help you and your family,” proclaimed Romney at the Republican National Convention.
Mitt’s Five Point Plan continues with the idea of energy independence; including increasing access to domestic energy sources and permitting exploration and development. And Romney calls for the necessity of international trade. To aid the economy, the Governor wants to establish stronger ties with the Latin American economy, and open a new market of American goods and services. All the while, curtailing unjust trade policies with countries like China are desired as well.
Opening and strengthening the economy is all good, but the keystone of his campaign though is the idea of more jobs and more take-home pay.
A stronger economy will lead to confidence, and confidence will allow business owners to facilitate their decisions. Romney is a huge supporter of small businesses and in order to help these institutions grow he plans on individual and corporate tax reforms in order to reduce taxes on job creation and reduce regulations on employers. Workers will be protected from strong-arm labor union tactics. Obama’s health care plans will be removed and replaced with a reform that improves the care and costs.
In order to ensure successful job creation, Romney stressed the importance of education, that way jobs can be efficiently filled with an impressive and productive workforce. Ultimately, America wants the best and brightest workforce in the world.
Romney’s other stances such as in foreign policy require strong defense in order to safeguard our nation and our allies. He recognizes the globalization and ties in the world, and remarks on the importance of global issues.
At the RN Convention, Romney added, “Today, our world is far more chaotic. We still face grave threats, but they come not from one country, or one group, or one ideology. The world is unfortunately not so defined. What America and our allies are facing is a series of threatening forces, ones that overlap and reinforce each other. To defend America, and to secure a peaceful and prosperous world, we need to clearly understand these emerging threats, grasp their complexity, and formulate a strategy that deals with them before they explode into conflict.”
His values include pro-life, benefits of stem-cell research, and the traditional definition of marriage; “I feel very deeply about the need to respect and tolerate people of different social – or sexual orientation. But at the same time, I believe marriage should be preserved as an institution for one man and one woman.”
The date is just around the corner. The candidates have issued their views. The speeches have been recited. The campaigns have been battling full force. Mitt Romney has ideas, experiences, and will to do well for the country; to lead us. “Believe in America.”
