Why now? Why now does the President decide to withdraw all troops from Iraq? Why now does he also decide to help out students with loans? Why now?
So he can win is the answer. It is a smart tactic and Obama is not the first or last president who will use it. The idea is that now with his re-election coming up next year and with a new republican debate every week Obama needs to do something to show the American public he is still the right candidate.
It is a fine tactic, but is it fair? Yes and no, it is fair in the sense that he is fighting for the American public’s vote and wants to win like the rest of them. But it is not fair to students, soldiers, families, children, parents, and to the American public.
Obama has been in office for approximately three years and in his campaign speeches he talked about pulling troops out of Iraq. Three years later, he announced that all troops would be withdrawn from Iraq by the end of 2011.
Why not earlier? What major development in Iraq made it suddenly okay for all of our troops to come home? What about all of the men and women who were injured or killed in all the time? How long did Obama keep this plan in his 2012 election holster?
I understand there is politics in politics but even if Obama had done this last year people would still remember it for the 2012 election. How many people would still be alive? How many more would have came home unharmed?
Obama also recently announced an executive order to lower the rate at which a college student has to pay back their loan from 15% to 10%.
The idea being it helps the student in the short term but in the long term with interest rates it could hurt the students.
It allows the students who right out of college don’t have the job they studied for time to get the high paying job later on. In turn helping them now but hurting them later. A smaller percent equals a longer period to pay the money back.
But yet again, why now? It is the politics of politics that leads to the answer. The youth vote is what propelled Obama to victory in 2008, now in hopes to do the same thing four years later with this executive order.
How many students wished this happened two years earlier so that they could have had a chance to lower their percent? Nation wide by the end of this year student loan debt will exceed one trillion dollars. More than the nations credit card debt. So why now?
It is a very “what have you done for me lately” type of world, especially in politics. So I understand the reasons why President Obama did these things now, but are they fair?
