Fifty Year Flashback: Elite Feet showed fancy footwork
With the 1980s seeing the emergence of pop legend Michael Jackson and the rise to fame for Madonna, there was a wide variety of music for people to dance along. At North Penn in 1981, there was no one better to perform to these hits than Elite Feet.
As the schools Dance Company, this ensemble of 20 members performed at several North Penn Schools as well as a variety of community functions. Adviser Deb Buckner choreographed multiple routines for the group to use at their different showcases. Pieces such as “Fame” and “West Side Story” were incorporated into their dances as well.
Elite Feet saw a makeover as the group transitioned into a “Dance Team” in the 2000’s. They then started performing during half time for the NP boys and girls basketball teams, bringing an upbeat atmosphere to the crowd.
“It’s important to have a dance team to entertain and show our creative talents, while working together as a team, to help generate excitement and school spirit. I love being a part of it,” exclaimed junior member Kyra Frant. Frant is one of the 14 girls who make up the 2015-2016 team.
There has been much growth from the beginning “Elite Feet” to the current “North Penn Dance Team”.
“The team really continues to grow as an integral part of the spirit of North Penn, uniting music and dance to connect students and families to the community even further,” explained 2015 Dance Team co-advisor and choreographer Amy Milar. As a part of the team herself back when she attended North Penn, she has seen first-hand the importance of continuing to have a Dance Team.
“It’s a way for students to enjoy the art form of visual aesthetics combined with music and fun.”
School spirit continues to be a large part of North Penn with help from the Dance Team. Elite Feet continues to have an impact today as the NP Dance Team works together each year to bring new and entertaining dances to a diverse community.
