TOWAMENCIN – After years of dormancy, North Penn High School’s Homecoming dance is making a grand return Saturday, September 21st, fueled by an impressive wave of student enthusiasm.
In years past, the dance struggled to capture enough student interest. It was once a smaller, informal gathering, held immediately after the Homecoming football game. However, many students were not interested in this small dance, and attendance was very low.
But this year, things are different, thanks to the persistence of Student Government President, Claire Holsinger, who was determined to bring back a formal Homecoming dance to the high school. Her campaigning and support from faculty members like Mrs. Amy Young has brought the dance back in full force.
“This has been on the agenda for a few years now,” North Penn director of activities, Mr. Jonathan Fluck explained. “But the last few years, students have been talking about doing an actual homecoming dance, and there was just never interest. There were never enough students to make it worthwhile. At the end of last year, Claire was really pushing for it with other members of the SGA, and Mrs. Young was like ‘go for it, we’ll put a day in’, she believed that we would get enough.”
And sure enough, the government did “go for it”, with over 1,200 students securing tickets. The turnout was a pleasant surprise to faculty, including Fluck, who admitted, “I have to say I didn’t think students would sign up, I thought it would be like the years past. Boy, was I proven wrong.”
With such a strong turnout, Fluck believes the dance is here to stay.
“I think this is something that will stick around. I think the Homecoming dance at North Penn will become an annual tradition now,” Fluck said.
Thanks to the overwhelming enthusiasm for this years’ dance is promised to make an incredible night, that will also lay the groundwork for what just might be a staple of school tradition for years to come.
