PA State Rep Todd Stephens visits North Penn

TOWAMENCIN- Pennsylvania State Representative Todd Stephens came to North Penn High School on Wednesday October 3rd to speak to government classes and other interested students. After introducing himself, students were given the opportunity to ask him any questions they had.

North Penn is apart of Stephens’ district, so he was able to answer questions specific to the community as well as general political questions. Students asked about a variety of topics such as pensions, roads, gun laws, marijuana, Kavanaugh, and college costs. Stephens was happy to answer any questions as he likes to see students involved in politics.

“I would love to see more young people get involved and engaged in the political process. We impact you and it’s important to understand how it works.” said Stephens.

Stephens’ wanted to stress to the students that they should care about the government because it affects them everyday in more ways than they think.

“We’re spending [the student’s] money too. You guys are out working part time jobs and we are taking some of every paycheck and you have a right to be heard. It is important to know how the government is spending your money,” Stephens explained.

The students in attendance were engaged and eager to ask questions and listen to Stephens. Senior Veronica Leite agrees with Stephens that students should want to understand the political process.

“I think it’s important for students to understand not just what’s going on in the government on a national scale but also on a local scale because it affects them more than they think.” said Leite.

As election day comes up, Stephens encourages all students who are eligible to register to vote so that they can make an impact on their local government.
