The 2019 Spring musical is…
TOWAMENCIN- The North Penn auditorium was filled with nerves and excitement as students filed in to hear the big announcement of the 2019 spring musical on Wednesday night. To the students delight and surprise, it was announced as Mamma Mia!
Mamma Mia! was written by Catherine Johnson, based on the songs of ABBA, and composed by Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus. A fun, upbeat musical about a mother, Donna, preparing for her daughter Sophie’s wedding. What Donna does not know is that Sophie invited three men to her wedding in an attempt to figure which one is really her father.
With fun 70’s music and dance numbers, Mamma Mia! is a musical that is enjoyable for all generations. North Penn students were very surprised, but immediately excited for the spring season. Molly Hofstaedter, a senior involved in North Penn Theatre, shared her thoughts on the announcement.
“Although we are having a blast with Shakespeare this fall, it’s so exciting to be tackling a modern rock musical that so contrasts what we’re doing at the moment, and it’s even more exciting that Mamma Mia! is so mainstream today, which we hope will draw in incredibly enthusiastic audiences in May,” said Molly.
Being a very popular movie and musical, the news spread quickly. Students, staff, and people in the community have heard and are beyond excited to see the show.
“We were really thrilled to tell our students that our spring musical will be Mamma Mia. It’s such a contemporary show, we just had the second movie in theaters. It’s a show that I know our students and older generations in the community love, whether you love ABBA from years ago or whether you just love the movie or the show. We’re just so excited that we’re going to bring all of that energy and positive feeling to the stage of North Penn High School Theatre,” said co-director Andrea Roney.
