A glimpse into junior prom preparations

TOWAMENCIN- Prom, one of the most anticipated days in high school. While most are stressing over dresses, tuxedos, and promposals, one often forgets that there’s another side to the story. There is a lot that goes into making prom as magical as one could imagine, but often times those who help make prom so wonderful aren’t given the credit they deserve.

The junior class cabinet has been putting in a tremendous amount of work for the upcoming junior prom on March 25th. They’re in charge of decorations, food, the theme, and everything else that makes prom so much fun. Without them, junior prom wouldn’t be possible.

“[We’ve been preparing] since right after winter ball, which is not a lot of time to prepare. We have less time for winter ball and more work to do so everyone’s pretty focused this time,” says Maggie Walsh, president of the 2018 class cabinet.

Although they’re only given a short amount of time to get things done, it seems as though they have it all under control, and given that the cabinet was in charge of setting up the winter ball as well, they have an idea of what troubles they may run into.

“We [started to set] up [prom] a lot earlier, because I know with winter ball we learned a lot from setting up timing wise so we’re trying to fix that this time,” says Nafisah Haque, a member 2018 class cabinet.

This year, junior proms theme is “Around the World,” which was chosen through a popular vote. Some of the other options were “Under the Sea,” “Decades,” “Flowers,” and “Dark Fairy Tales.” How does the cabinet choose the theme?

“There’s always like a big list, and we brainstorm, vote, then cut it down, and then eventually it’s just whatever the majority picks,” Haque explained. “We usually leave them up on the board, and Mr. Gutsche’s classes will usually have opinions about it, so we hear about it, and then what seems to be the popular opinion we take into [consideration] when we start voting as a class.”

Adding to the incredible fact that the students are mostly the ones controlling prom, with the supervision of advisors Mr. Ryan Gutsche and Ms. Phuong Huynh, all food comes from the North Montco Technical Career Center.

“The food and stuff we get from Montco. The officers taste test them during one of the school days and then we just pick which one is most popular,” said Walsh.

With all the hard work the 2018 class cabinet students are putting into this, junior prom will undoubtedly be a night to remember. Of course, a lot of pressure is put on the cabinet, but that isn’t getting in the way of them making this a great night for everyone.

“I think that like as a class we put it on ourselves that it has to be good,” said Walsh.
