TOWAMENCIN- The thrill of the homecoming game excited North Penn High School students on Friday, September 23, as they excitedly attended the school’s pre-game party and entered Crawford Stadium. There was much to be determined from this night. Would the North Penn Football team remain undefeated? Would the Pennridge Rams take the win? Would the authentic cookie corner cookies be there? Although those factors may seem vital to a perfect game, there was one other aspect that set Friday night’s game apart from others. Every student’s Snapchat story was sure to record the highlight: Ben Hartranft’s crowning of Homecoming King.

Without a doubt, Hartranft was the most energetic member of the court, and there is no mystery surrounding how the term “Benergy” was coined.

After dreaming all junior year and summer vacation for this moment, Hartranft finally fulfilled his dreams of being North Penn’s Homecoming King. Just after being nominated, Hartranft found himself shouting with and crying tears of joy. It wasn’t a surprise to him, because the explanation is simple; he brightens everyone’s day, whether it’s teachers or students. One can’t help but smile at Hartranft’s firm, yet friendly, handshakes and enthusiastic greetings while passing him in the hallway.

“They all love me,” explained Hartranft, with a grin that stretched ear to ear.

After being nominated for court, Hartranft had a “gut feeling” about winning. It seemed everyone wanted to vote for him. Even his competitors for king supported his candidacy, cheering “Vote for Ben!” He would like to thank North Penn’s cheerleaders for their “Ben Time” sign, Coach Beck and the football team, and all the students who voted for him. The endless support reflects a fresh sheen of confidence and optimism over Hartranft.

After getting over 2,000 likes on NBC 10’s article about him, Hartranft has read many positive comments from parents of other children with autism. The reviews give him a rush of joy, as he realizes what an inspiration he is to teens. Being homecoming king in general is such an honor, but for this king, that honor stretches further.

“[I was] proud to be in the court,” said Hartranft. “A lot of people on the autism spectrum tell me, ‘Oh, my son has Autism. It’s really cool to see a student like you win.’”

Hartranft is overjoyed that he is an example for other high school students with autism to go after their dreams. Hartranft is also an active participant in Men’s Choir, loves hanging out with his friends, and enjoys endless amount of time at school.

Although Hartranft expressed his love for NPHS, he seems to have an idea regarding a plan for the future. The bright eyed eighteen-year-old explained that he hopes to do something in the amusement park field.

“I want to bring together family and love,” said Hartranft.
