Causing a racquet – NPHS Health/PE teacher Keith Clauss gets ready for the first ever badminton tournament at NPHS.

TOWAMENCIN – The North Penn High School Phys.-Ed. Department always likes to keep things fresh. So when Mr. Keith Clauss and colleagues saw a decline in Pickle Ball Tournament hype, they decided it was time to break out a new racquet.

On Monday, February 29th, 2016, the North Penn High School Physical Education Department will be holding their first annual badminton doubles tournament for all NPHS students and staff to show off their racquet skills.

Badminton, one of the many racquet sports, has become rather popular amongst the gym classes here at North Penn. The tournament, which used to be a pickleball tournament, aims for students and staff to get involved and have fun while doing so.

“[Badminton] seems to be more popular with the students right now than pickleball. In the past we had done pickleball every year but the interest is sort of waning on that one and badminton got a little more popular so we decided to change it up this year,” expressed Clauss.

The tournament will be double elimination, guaranteeing that each team will be allowed to play at least 2 games. There is no entry fee and it is free to play, but players must have a partner in order to participate. Both players must be present during registration which will take place the night of the event at 5:30pm. A review of the rules will then take place at 6pm followed by the start of the tournament in the boys gym.

“There seems to be a lot of interest in it and hopefully we’ll keep it going,” Clauss said.
