Guatemalan landslide leaves little hope for survivors

Mother Nature’s unpredictable dominance was on display Thursday, October 1when a landslide buried the majority of the El Cambray village, located outside Guatemala City. Heavy rain had soaked the surrounding forested hills, and because the town is set deep in a valley, there was next to nothing to act as barrier between the homes and the dirt.

A week has passed, and search and rescue teams report a rising death toll at 130. The upcoming days are expected to be just as grim as villagers and diggers uncover debris from houses and humans alike. With 300 people still unaccounted for, the community of El Cambray is holding vigils in an effort to keep spirits high while the search for survivors continues.

Doctors Without Borders demand investigation of hospital air strike

After an unintentional air strike from the United States on a hospital in Afghanistan operating under the organization Doctors Without Borders, the organization is prompting President Obama to begin an investigation into why this egregious error occurred in the first place.

Twenty-two people lost their lives during the weekend bombing, among them were doctors, nurses, and patients. During a New York press conference on Wednesday, Executive Director Jason Cone explained that “Even war has rules,” and that if the U.S. could not sufficiently validate its mistake, Doctors Without Borders would find someone who would.

A non-governmental organization known by its French name Medecins Sans Frontieres (MFS) plans to initiate a second investigation into the attack under the International Humanitarian Fact-Finding Commission, which is the first time the commission has ever been utilized. One signature from any of the seventy-six countries involved is needed to jumpstart the inquiry.

British photographer falls to death

Some people will do anything for the perfect photo, but British tourist Zoe Woolmer didn’t expect to die for it. The twenty-three year old was on vacation in Australia visiting King’s Canyon with a tour guide company when she fell fifty feet to her death attempting to take a picture of the scenery.

Witnesses say it was as if she “walked on air,” before realizing the lack of footing. Woolmer suffered severely traumatic wounds to her head and body. She was in Australia on twelve month working visa when she died.

European Union tries to halt people smuggling

The mounting refugee crisis brought together German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Francois Hollande to make a joint address of historic proportions. The International Organization for Migration stated that a record of over 520,000 refugees and migrants have gotten to Europe by sea, crossing both the Mediterranean and Aegean Seas, and with that a scarily rising number of deaths.

To put an end to the increasing levels of human trafficking and casualties, the European Union launched Operation Sophia. It dictates that navy personnel must be allowed to board, seize, search, and divert vessels suspected of human smuggling at least twelve miles off the Libyan coast. Germany, France, Britain, and Spain have contributed five warships, seven planes, and helicopters that will be led by an Italian aircraft carrier.
