Coughing, sneezing, runny nose, and a sore throat- all symptoms of a common cold- but could they be more? If you are experiencing any or all of these symptoms, don’t take them too lightly because they may be the flu in disguise.

It has been made official that this year’s flu season has become an epidemic, so pay attention to indications of sickness and more importantly, try to prevent the spread of germs as much as you can. During this time of year, it’s okay to be be a Germaphobe!

The flu outbreak started early this year and continues to spread, with the Center for Disease Control has reported 29 pediatric deaths as of  January 17th. Although the vaccine is only 62% effective, it is better to have a 38% chance of becoming ill than a 100% chance. So if you have not yet received a vaccine, it is advised that you should get one as soon as possible.

There are other more notorious signs and symptoms of the flu, but those of the common cold may be the first clues. As much as you may hate them, they are the calm before the storm.

Some of the signs and symptoms that your cold has become the flu include a fever of 100° or higher, aching muscles, chills and sweats, headache, fatigue and weakness, and nasal congestion. It is important to clue in to these signs and make sure you get examined if any of them arise.

Be on lookout for signs and symptoms and try your best to keep germs from spreading. Wash your hands often, use hand sanitizer, refrain from touching your face, and don’t cough or sneeze into your hands. Even though the flu season may seem to be coming to an end, it’s always a good idea to be cautious- sickness is always in the air!
