It has been one week since the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary; flags have been flying at half staff and many moments of silence have taken place as we remember those who lost their lives. Many people have been doing things in memory of those victims.
After this event, television personality Ann Curry thought, “What if? Imagine if everyone could commit to doing one act of kindness for every one of those children killed in Newtown.” Curry then acted on this thought.
She tweeted to her followers the idea of doing something kindhearted in memory of those victims and said she would retweet what great things people where doing. Using the #26acts or #20acts, people all across the country are joining this movement of kindness, to commemorate the 20 children and 6 adults who lost their precious lives.
These random acts have shown that there is more good than evil in the world and that people still care. These kind acts are limitless; things like buying gift cards and leaving them on random stranger’s cars or buying the food for someone behind you in line. Others have taped money to a vending machine at work, that way the person after them can get a free snack or drink.
An act can be as little or as big as you want it to be. It can be as expensive as you want it to be. Some people have bought 20 toys to donate to kids in need. One woman said, at a restaurant, she anonymously bought dinner for an elderly women eating dinner by herself. People are feeling good for doing good.
Such acts of kindness are a great thing to remind ourselves and others how much care we have. Doing these not only remembers the victims but also gives you great warmth in knowing you may have made someone’s day.

Today we were the recipients of one of 26 random acts of kindness. A stranger left something on my wife’s windshield at the YMCA. It was an envelope with a $20 gift card for a local resident. Can’t wait to pass it on.
