We are trying to function in trying economic times. Most of the discussion about education now focuses on economics as opposed to curriculum. I realize that there is a finite amount of money available for education. However, I would like to raise the issue of the student. Education, like parenting, is supposed to be about doing what is best for the kids. Every class on the proposed cut list has value and brings a unique educational experience to the students. However, while we focus on money, let us try to remember that this is about the students. Motivation is the biggest issue in education. We, as teachers and administrators, have to find ways to reach the unmotivated students. There are students who do not like school that take these classes. These classes are often the highlights of the day for many of our most unmotivated students. There is a fine line between graduation and dropping out. Will these cuts lead more students to graduation or to dropping out???
