TOWAMENCIN – Fresh off the wave of a successful fashion show, aptly themed after the four elements of nature, the FCS Department is looking toward a new project. Community Recycling is donating shoes to third world countries. C.R.’s mantra is “Revenue, Conservation, and Sustainable Business Practices.” The company allows the people to decide who the proceeds will benefit. For Mrs. Townsend, a proud owner of a Doberman named Molly, the answer was simple: The Delaware Valley Doberman Pincher Association.
Townsend volunteers at the shelter which fosters Dobermans waiting for a loving home; here where she formed the idea for the fundraising project. The shoes will be collected in boxes and weighed, and for each pound, fifty cents will automatically be raised. This project is a fusion of the Fashion and Independent Living teacher’s admiration for animals, the environment, charity, and of course, shoes. She has loved animals from a young age and admits that going green is “so very chic”
Most shoes are welcome, although Townsend remarks that “high heels probably won’t do well in Sudan.” Rollerblades, ice skates, and ski boots are not accepted, yet other types of shoes that are not necessarily ready to wear can still be useful. Parts such as leather, plastic, and rubber can be turned into tires or recycled for other uses.
When donating shoes, students can write personalized messages to the future recipients who are addressed as “Dear Solemate.” Townsend’s own note is special because she is donating the sneakers that she wore during her first 5k run. She recommends that her students to pick a pair of shoes that meant something, because “every shoe has a story”.
Everyone has shoes that don’t fit or that they regret buying, or maybe a great pair that they know would brighten someone else’s life. This great charitable event will last until Friday, March 23rd. Please drop off shoes in F130 and make a difference, one step at a time!
