Campaign Manager: Zachary Schaffer
Candidate: Jon Huntsman Jr.
About the Campaign Manager:
Interests: I am interested in politics, photography, Judaism, history, and sports.
School involvements: Jewish Cultural Club President, Future Business Leaders of America President, Mock Trial, Mock Convention
Why did you want to get involved with Mock Convention? I am very interested in politics, and I was very involved in the last election. I thought this would be a great opportunity to immerse myself in this election and learn more about each individual GOP candidate as well as how the process of choosing candidates works.
What are you most excited about? I am looking forward to learning more about what it’s like to campaign in a political atmosphere. Oh, and winning of course!
Why are you interested in politics? From an early age, I was always engaged in political conversations in my household. I carried those on outside of my house, and always tried my best to watch the news and stay aware of what was happening in the country. Then, after a visit to Washington D.C., I got to see firsthand how our government works, and the impact that everyday people like me can actually have.
Why is it important that students understand politics? Politics affects everyone’s lives, economic welfare, and personal security on a daily basis. Students need to understand politics so that they are prepared to support what they believe in. By lacking a thorough understanding of the political world, students are essentially wasting one of their biggest freedoms.
About the Candidate:
His name is Jon Huntsman Jr.; he is currently 51 years old and last served as Ambassador to China from 2009-2011, and before that was Governor of Utah from 2005-2009.
Current position held: Resigned from the position of Ambassador to China on January 31st, 2011, to explore a presidential campaign.
Background information: Jon Huntsman Jr. is an American politician, businessman, and diplomat who served as the 16th governor of Utah. He has also served in the administrations of four United States Presidents.
Major campaign points: A tax policy in favor of significantly lower general rates and lowering the corporate tax rate from 35 to 25 percent. His top priorities are economic development, health-care reform, education, and energy security.
Why students should vote for your candidate: Students should vote for my candidate because he is the only one willing to compromise and work with both sides of the political spectrum, which is the only way to accomplish tasks in this political era. He is moderately conservative, and is capable of gaining support from conservatives, as well as liberals. His accomplishments in simplifying and cutting taxes, cutting spending, and expanding job creation in Utah is proof enough of his abilities.
