Meat dress, fire dress among new FCS prom endeavors

North Penn’s Mrs. Townsend poses with one of the most desired prom dresses in the giveaway, Lady Gaga’s famous “Meat Dress.”

Last-minute procrastinators have about only a month to pick out the dress which will set them apart and show off their unique style at this year’s Senior Prom, and with selection in many dress shops waning, the time is certainly now to pick a dress.

However, the FCS department is looking to help out with the prom dress scramble this year. As a part of the fashion and textile classes, the department will be making a limited number of prom dresses to donate to those who still need them.

The dresses are certainly not like the ordinary prom dress. Instead of using typical mediums like satin, tulle, lace, and beading, the department figured they would give girls a chance to show off incredibly unique style. The theme for all of the dresses will be pop culture-inspired, and designers so far have chosen to replicate Katniss Everdeen’s ‘dress on fire’ from the Hunger Games and some Lady Gaga dresses, including her infamous meat and swan dresses. Townsend was incredibly inspired and proud of her fashion students when they proposed their ideas.

There is even talk of a dress made of Chick-Fil-A chicken since the meat option does pose a small salmonella risk on the dance floor.

The woman behind this project, fashion teacher Mrs. Townsend, explains the reasons behind starting this project.

“I’ll get some girls who say they don’t have a dress for prom this year and they’d like help making their own. Sometimes, I haven’t been able to help – it’s not in the curriculum – but I’ve always really wondered what there could be to do. So this year I decided to make it a part of the class.”

One other dress straight from the headlines that the department chose to make was the black and blue/white and gold dress. However, it won’t just be the average dress like the real dress in the picture was – the dress will actually significantly change color from the original blue and black to white and gold under the dance floor lights. Hopefully, everyone will be able to agree on what color it is under the specific conditions.

However, the uncommon materials for many of these dresses have certainly proven a challenge for the department. For the ‘dress on fire, well… yeah – fire code issues galore – kind of invokes memories of the great Christmas tree scandal of 2013, although it does come with a complimentary fire extinguisher. And as for the dress made entirely of meat, a special order had to be placed at a five star restaurant in Japan for 100% Kobe beef. Townsend knew how ridiculous it sounded to place an order for meat halfway around the world, but she did it for good reasons. “We knew a dress made of meat might have some structural problems, so we decided to go with high quality beef that we knew would hold up and stay fitted, even after dancing and everything. And it comes with a complimentary preservative spray that should keep it fresh all night.”

One girl was actually close to buying the meat, but feared she wouldn’t be able to find the right shoes to match.

There is still a relatively large range of dresses to choose from, including many of the ball gowns, but selection wanes rapidly. Townsend explains that every day, at least one gets chosen, if not more. Stop by the FCS department today to check out their range of fascinating and eye-catching dresses, and you just might be the belle of the ball!
