Mo’ne Davis is a girl of many talents, and she is using them to her full capability. The second girl to ever play in the Little League World Series and the first to ever pitch a shutout in the Little League World Series, Davis is now embarking into the fashion world, and I couldn’t be more excited. Graciously and maturely putting the cruel words of Bloomsburg player Joey Casselberry behind her, Davis has developed a special shoe line whose sales will benefit a charity.

At the young age of only thirteen, Davis has partnered with M4D3 (Make a Difference Everyday) to design a unique line of sneakers for children and women. The proceeds will benefit Plan International USA’s Because I am a Girl Initiative which works to aid girls living in poverty in impoverished countries. On the heel of each shoe is stamped the phrase “Throw Like a Girl,” embodying the empowering message of encouragement Davis hopes to spread through her actions and now sneaker line.

“I never thought at the age of 13 I’d be a role model, but having young girls look up to me is pretty cool,” Davis said in a M4D3 news release. “If I can inspire them to reach their goals, that would be even cooler.”

Available for both children and women, the shoes come in a variety of colors with a special edition featuring her Taney Little League team’s colors. The shoes are unique and combine the best of fashionable and functional with perfect bright colors for spring and a comfy sneaker fit. Davis’s hand in the design process is evident as the threaded seams of the shoe resemble those of a baseball’s. The shoe uniquely brings together the masculine and athletic look of a typical high top sneaker, but with Davis’s personal design choices, she brings in a feminine flair, making these sneakers sure to be a hot item this season.

It is not rare for someone with the amount of success Davis has had to venture into the fashion world, but it is surprising for someone of her age. It is clear Davis is no typical thirteen-year-old, from both her athletic feats and business endeavors. Davis’s remarkable character also makes her a valuable force in the often cutthroat fashion world, as has been evidenced by not only her move to have the shoes benefit a worthy charity, but also by her recent actions in the news. Joey Casselberry, a member of Bloomsburg University’s baseball team, recently tweeted a very offensive tweet, criticizing Davis for no reason at all. While Bloomsburg quickly removed Casselberry from the team, Davis reached out to the University, requesting that Casselberry be allowed his spot back on the team. Davis’s exceptional diplomacy and maturity make her an impressive force on her baseball team, in her community, and especially in fashion.

Mo’ne Davis is taking the world by storm, and I am sure her shoes will do no less. Though often seen as superficial or frivolous, the fashion world does hold immense influence and power in people’s lives, and Davis has chosen to embrace this power, using it to benefit others in need. As the weather warms up and spring finally begins, a new pair of sneakers is a must, and Davis’s colorful high tops will certainly be at the top of my list.
