To most, The Bachelorette is a commonly heard title. The show features one single host and 25 other singles who compete for the host’s heart, and the winner receives marriage. With season thirteen coming, the hit reality TV show will be hosting its first ever black female lead: Rachel Lindsay. This historical casting not only speaks volumes for the black community, but also for black singles out there.

Lindsay’s upcoming appearance in season thirteen is groundbreaking for ABC. The announcement happened while the current season was still on air with Lindsay still on the show. ABC successfully spoiled the rest of what is left of the season, letting viewers know that Lindsay does not win.

The creator of the Bachelorette gave viewers several hints that this would be a historical casting by advising viewers to tune into Jimmy Kimmel live and that the announcement would made on the show.

The mastermind behind the hit show The Bachelorette tweeted, “This history-making, historic announcement could be the most-historic in the history of #thebachelor !!!” hinting that the lead in the show would be a black woman.

Looking at TV shows with black female leads, one can observe how few and far between of an occurrence that is. Hosts like Wendy Williams and Tyra Banks are often viewed as hits, because it is such an odd occurrence. Likewise, with a black bachelorette, America should be interested to see if the show gains or loses its strong following base.

For one to notice how rare a black female host is, it is exciting to see how this upcoming season will unfold. Lindsay is a true rarity in television and it’s both exciting and motivational to black and minority viewers.

Lindsay’s episode of the bachelorette will be airing on May 22nd on ABC.
