Netflix’s recently released show Daredevil, a Netflix original supported by the original creator of the series, Marvel, is a fast-paced and riveting foray into the world of television. The main character, Matt Murdock, is charming, compassionate, and courageous, though embattled as well.

The series stars British actor Charlie Cox as the eponymous character, Elden Henson as Matt’s partner at the Nelson-Murdock law firm, Foggy. Deborah Ann Woll and Rosario Dawson star as women who become very important in the partner’s lives, though in what ways the viewer will have to discover for themselves.

Matt, who was blinded at a young age by a freak accident, wears a black mask and fights crime, like the average superhero. However, by day he leads a second life at a law firm with Foggy, who is the only person in Matt’s life who knows his secret identity. The pair also hires an assistant, found where perhaps they least expected to.

The series is gripping yet charming, funny yet poignant. The writing follows the plot of the Daredevil comics closely. The twists and turns throw a wrench into the plans of the characters, but add an interesting dimension and keep the viewer enthralled.

The backstory of Matt’s childhood builds context and character development for his actions in adulthood. He suffered many tragedies as a child, and as a result translates his anger and sadness into anger against modern criminals and crime syndicates, often saving victims who experienced similar situations to his own.

Netflix has seen incredible success with many of its original series; Netflix created a show with a now cult-like following, Orange is the New Black. Netflix has also created the popular Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, which I reviewed earlier this year, and the unknown yet endearing and daring Scrotal Recall.

Daredevil is easy to watch, easy to become emotionally invested in, and difficult to forget about. It seems like just the average superhero story, but its high quality production, solid writing and acting, and heartwarming yet thrilling story are sure to keep viewers coming back for more, and waiting, as I am, for the second season to return so the adventure can continue. You certainly don’t need to be a daredevil to love the story of Matt Murdock.
