HOLLYWOOD – Talented individuals adorned in glittering dresses or dapper suits graced the stage at the 86th Academy Awards. Hosted by the highly entertaining Ellen DeGeneres, the star-studded night was bound to take twists and turns as categories were awarded.
Starting the night off by poking fun at popular celebrities like Jennifer Lawrence and Meryl Streep, Ellen continued to surprise the audience by ordering pizza halfway through the show. She then brought the pizza delivery man out into the audience to distribute pizza, enlisting the help of other stars to distribute it around the Dolby Theatre. She also made history with the most retweeted tweet ever – a huge selfie of stars taken by Bradley Cooper.
Among all these antics, Oscar awards recognizing talent in the film industry were awarded. The Great Gatsby won two awards for costume and production design, and Disney’s Frozen took home two awards, one for Best Animated Feature Film and another for Best Original Song. Gravity won a total of seven awards, including the award for Sound Editing and Visual Effects, but 12 Years a Slave ultimately took home the award for Best Picture.
Other notable awards include Best Actor winner Matthew McConaughey for Dallas Buyers Club – better luck next year Leonardo – and Best Actress winner Cate Blanchett for Blue Jasmine. McConaughey’s costar Jared Leto also took home an award for Best Actor in a Supporting role for Dallas Buyers Club. Lupita Nyong’o was over the moon in her acceptance speech for Actress in a Supporting Role for her role in 12 Years a Slave.
To rate other acceptance speeches, the creators of Frozen’s “Let it Go”, Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez, were the most original. Rhyming their way through their thank-you’s, the couple looked ecstatic at their Oscar win.
In a night that celebrates the accomplishments of the film industry, the stars and viewers remained thoroughly entertained throughout the entire award show.
