Clary discovers she is part of a world, her mother has erased from her memory, which most people can’t even see. The same day she finds her world full of demons and shadow hunters, warriors who fight the demons, her mother disappears. She delves into the world of shadow hunters Jace, Alex, and Isabelle who help her slowly discover what talents, beyond her wildest dreams, she possesses. As Clary immerses herself more and more in the world of shadow hunters she slowly neglects her best friend Simon who tries to help out, but gets kidnapped by vampires. As more and more bad events occur, everyone realizes Clary’s father and longtime villain of the shadow hunter world, Valentine, is still alive and trying to find the Mortal Cup in order to control both shadow hunters and demons. The noble shadow hunters strive to find the Mortal Cup and save the world from Valentine’s struggle for power.
The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones is filled with action, mystery, romance, and a little suspense thrown in at the end. It holds a little of everything for different kinds of fans; vampires and werewolves to angels and demons. The film is a step up from other teen book series that have been turned into movies in content and depth, *cough cough twilight.* Overall the movie is by itself is a fantastic addition to the world of fantasy, but compared to the book, comes up short.
The book portrays Jace as a sarcastic, experienced kind of full of himself hunter who does fall in love with Clary in the book and movie, but his personality is dialed down in the movie to just a slightly sassy, fighter who is just protective of Clary while in the books he encourages Clary to find her shadow hunter talents and save the world. Also Simon, Clary’s best friend, in the book gets turned in to a rat by the vampires, while in the movie just gets taken by the vampires.
