Future earth has been almost completely taken over by an alien race called ‘Souls’ that enter a human’s body and control them. They came to this planet on the basis of saving it, claiming that humans caused their own destruction and that they have come to restore peace, similar to what they have done for 12 other planets. But earth is different; the Souls do not control everyone. There is a small group of rebels that have evaded Soul take over. Melanie Stryder and her brother Jamie are not part of this group yet. They escaped Soul capture when their father died to save them and are now on the run. While trying to hide, Melanie and Jamie are found by another human survivor Jared Howe, who of course Melanie falls in love with.
While they are searching for a small group of legendary rebels, Melanie is captured by the Souls and a Soul is placed inside her. As far as non mind controlled human beings know, once a Soul enters a human, that human dies. But Melanie remains alive inside fighting with the Soul that tries to control her. The movie follows Melanie’s fight against the Soul that possesses her, the rebel’s fight against the Souls, and a leader of the Souls. This leader, called the Seeker, has mixed motives behind the finding of the rebel group that do not mesh with the Souls supposedly innocent motives.
Even though the movie is covered by the genre sci-fi, its many questionable plot twists make the futuristic story line seem more than just improbable, but confusing. Based off the novel by Stephanie Meyer, author of the Twilight novels, the Host has a lot of the same elements placed in her previous works; such as her notorious love triangles and hazy villains that leave you wary to how guilty they really are. The wishy-washy ending is encouraging after the dominating story line of rebels versus aliens. The Host has a fascinating plot and a lot of gray areas between good and evil that let you create your own opinions on whose team you side with. Do not necessarily write this movie off just because you are not a Twilight fan, but be prepared for plenty of kissing.
