Fans gathered sporting their best green and pink as they waited anxiously for what was sure to be an amazing show. P!nk is known to blow away her audience when she takes the stage, and she did just that last Sunday, St. Patrick’s Day, at the Philadelphia stop of her Truth About Love tour.
City and Colour, a band that P!nk herself is a fan of, opened the show with a few of their mellow tunes. P!nk later (over)shared that she listened to them while she was giving birth to her daughter, Willow. Before the show started, Willow was seen walking around backstage with Dad.
P!nk started her show with an acrobatic rendition of “Raise Your Glass.” As she bounced and flipped around her voice remained steady, putting some of her auto tuned peers to shame. She kept the energy going for the next few songs. Before she began one of her old songs, “Leave Me Alone (I’m Lonely)” she asked the crowd who was a good dancer and who was a not so good dancer before showcasing her best dorky dance moves.
During her new song “Try” she did an intense, athletic dance with one of her male dancers which included her supporting his entire weight in a yoga type pose. Following that she did a cover of “Wicked Game” by Chris Isaak, which younger fans, like me, have never heard of. At the beginning of the song her microphone wasn’t working but like a true professional she kept performing until it came on and never missed a beat. Her next song was one of her most popular new songs “Just Give Me A Reason” featuring Nate Ruess from Fun. Although he wasn’t there, his performance was prerecorded and played over the video screens.
After a few more songs from her new album, she captivated the crowd with her hit “Sober” which she performed while she was suspended above the stage in a cage like orb that remained in constant motion. As many as six of P!nk’s dancers accompanied her in the cage, at times orbiting around the outside. Her stage show requires her dancers to be more like circus performers than back up dancers. At times her concert seemed a lot like a circus in itself.
For the next few songs P!nk took a break from the acrobatics to fully display her powerful vocals. Accompanied by just a piano she sang a moving rendition of the song “Family Portrait” about her tumultuous childhood in Doylestown. Then she moved to the front of the stage with just her guitar player. She jokingly added that he didn’t begin playing the guitar until the age 15 stating “we hate those kinds of people.” Since this was her home town show she mentioned that both of her parents were in the audience, she gave some lucky fans in the front rows some rice crispy treats that her mom made. Laughing she assured everyone “they are really good, I have had four!” She quickly got serious before singing “Who Knew” which she said is about a friend who passed away. She dedicated Sunday’s performance to her grandmother.
Midway through the song she noticed a little girl was crying and stopped her song, to make sure she was okay. The girl was upset over some misbehaving fans near her seat. P!nk gave her a stuffed frog and a rice crispy treat that someone had thrown on stage. She started the song over, joking with her guitar player that she wasn’t coordinated enough to pick up where she left off. Yahoo’s home page contains an article about the little girl, which can be found here.
She sang one more slow song that typically contains explicit language but that people have told her contains “mom advice” about being perfect the way you are. Since she became a mom herself she laughs that she has become a little soft and can’t swear in front of her daughter who is learning to talk.
Then she brought that high energy back up with a medley of three of her old songs; “Most Girls”/ “There You Go”/ “You Make Me Sick.” Putting aside her dorky dancing, P!nk showed during this medley she is actually a very good dancer. To go with her old songs, she shared that she was wearing the leather jacket she bought herself when she got her first record deal in the late 90s. She finished her main set with two more upbeat songs from her new album.
For her encore she started with a high flying version of “So What.” Attached to wires she flew around spinning and flipping around the venue, reaching as high as the “nose bleeds.” Fans of P!nk have come to expect this type of daring performance. She ended her show with “Glitter in the Air” twirling above the stage on nothing more than a piece of fabric, with a few of her female dancers suspended above her. This was a similar performance to the one she did at the 2010 Grammy Awards.
P!nk did not disappoint; she knows how to entertain and seems to have just as much fun as her audience.
