Something Borrowed, a refreshing take on the typical romantic comedy, features a complicated love triangle with conservative lawyer Rachel White (Ginnifer Goodwin, He’s Just Not That Into You) tangled in the center. Based on Emily Giffin’s bestselling novel, this summer blockbuster newly released on DVD and BlueRay is sure to make you smile.
Kate Hudson (You, Me, and Dupree) plays Rachel’s best friend Darcy, a pretentious and self-centered party girl that always gets exactly what she wants, including her flawless fiancé Dex (Colin Egglefield). Egglesfield (Life Happens) does a great job portraying the part perfectly; he’s tall, handsome, and the successful lawyer type that girls like Darcy seem to always flock to. But the story has a twist–Dex does not want to marry Darcy at all; in fact, he is head over heels in love with Rachel, and to say the feeling is mutual would be an understatement.
The setting of New York City adds to the romance element of the movie, while loveable characters like always cynical and sarcastic Ethan (John Krasinski, The Office), and Claire (Ashley Williams, The Protector) the ditzy and relentless “friend” that nobody likes, add that seamless touch of humor that so many romantic films seem to lack.
As the secret relationship between Dex and Rachel escalates, the story takes you through the winding journey of their unconventional love. Lessons subtly embedded in the plot teach you the value of friendship and the importance of following your heart.
The chemistry of Something Borrowed’s cast in combination with the notable balance between humor and romance make this movie deserving of four out of five stars, a definite worthwhile watch.
